چکیده

Global, heat flux-driven ITG gyrokinetic simulations which manifest the formation of macroscopic, mean toroidal flow profiles with peak thermal Mach number 0.05, are reported. Both a particle-in-cell (XGC1p) and a semiLagrangian (GYSELA) approach are utilized without a priori assumptions of scale separation between turbulence and mean fields. Flux-driven ITG simulations with different edge flow boundary conditions show in both approaches the development of net unidirectional intrinsic rotation in the co-current direction. Intrinsic torque is shown to scale approximately linearly with the inverse scale length of the ion temperature gradient. External momentum input is shown to effectively cancel the intrinsic rotation profile, thus confirming the existence of a local residual stress and intrinsic torque. Fluctuation intensity, intrinsic torque and mean flow are demonstrated to develop inwards from the boundary. The measured correlations between residual stress and two fluctuation spectrum symmetry breakers, namely E × B shear and intensity gradient, are similar. Avalanches of (positive) heat flux, which propagate either outwards or inwards, are correlated with avalanches of (negative) parallel momentum flux, so that outward transport of heat and inward transport of parallel momentum are correlated and mediated by avalanches. The probability distribution functions of the outward heat flux and the inward momentum flux show strong structural similarity. (Some figures may appear in colour only in the online journal)

Intrinsic Torque and the Global Structure of Self-consistent Intrinsic Rotation Profiles in Flux-Driven ITG Turbulence

Global, heat flux-driven gyrokinetic simulations which manifest the formation of macroscopic, mean toroidal flow profiles, with thermal Mach number 0.05, is observed in global ITG simulations. Both PIC (XGC1) and Semi-Lagrangian (GYSELA) approaches are utilized without apriori assumptions of scaleseparation between turbulence and mean fields. ITG simulations with no-slip boundary condition usin...

Understanding and Predicting Profile Structure and Parametric Scaling of Intrinsic Rotation

P. H. Diamond University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA Abstract This paper reports on a recent advance in developing physical understanding and a firstprinciples-based model for predicting intrinsic rotation profiles in magnetic fusion experiments. It is shown for the first time that turbulent fluctuation-driven residual stress (a non-diffusive component of momentum flux) al...

Nonlinear flow generation by electrostatic turbulence in tokamaks

Global gyrokinetic simulations have revealed an important nonlinear flow generation process due to the residual stress produced by electrostatic turbulence of ion temperature gradient ITG modes and trapped electron modes TEMs . Turbulent transport of toroidal angular momentum in fusion plasmas

Global nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) and collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence find significant spinning up of a plasma in the directions opposite for CTEM and ITG turbulence. The outward momentum convection by the particle flux could be strong enough to overcome the inward momentum pinch and reverse the radial direction of the convective mo...

This is a Word Template for Producing a Full Manuscript for the Fusion Energy Conference Proceedings 2002

A new global gyrokinetic toroidal full-f five dimensional (5D) Vlasov simulation (GT5D) [1] is developed using a novel non-dissipative conservative finite difference scheme (NDCFD) [2], which guarantees numerical stability by satisfying relevant conservation properties of the modern gyrokinetic theory. By using GT5D, robust and accurate long time simulations of tokamak micro-turbulence are enab...
